2015 PVL CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP

The Iowa Icemen competed in the 2015 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Championships in Detroit, Michigan.  To start the tournament the Icemen faced a difficult Virginia Vibe team.  Iowa started off strong winning the first set 25-18.  However, Virginia fought back winning the next three sets to down the Icemen 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 16-25, 19-25).  After facing a difficult match with the Virginia Vibe, the Icemen had to bounce back a few hours later when they faced Lakeshore Surge.  Iowa started off slow dropping both sets one and two by two points (23-25, 23-25).  However, they were not about to allow Lakeshore an easy three set victory.  Iowa fought back to win sets three and four (25-17, 25-14) to advance to a fifth set.  The fifth set was a battle but Iowa was able to prevail with a 15-12 victory in the 5th set to collect their first win of the tournament.

Day two of the tournament brought two more exciting matches for the Iowa Icemen.  The first match of the day pitted the Icemen against NorCal Premier.  The Iowa Icemen started where they left off day one, on fire!  They won sets one and two in another close match (25-20, 27-25).  NorCal Premier was not about to back down and instead fought back in sets three and four (18-25, 28-30) to even the match at 2-2.  For the second time in two days the Iowa Icemen found themselves in a heated 5th set; once again prevailing (15-11).  The Iowa Icemen weren't done for the day though, they had a hard match ahead of them against their closest rival Great Lakes Lightning.  Iowa Icemen came into the tournament seeded 3rd and just behind them seeded 4th was the Great Lakes Lightning.  The Iowa Icemen started off strong winning set one (25-20) but Great Lakes bounced back in set 2 (20-25).  With the match even at 1-1 the Iowa Icemen knew what they had to do.  Icemen battled to win sets three and four (25-23, 34-32).

Due to the loss of a three way tie, the Iowa Icemen were sent to the Silver Bracket.  The Icemen had to face NE Midnight Riders for the first match of the day.  Iowa won this match in a well fought three sets (28-26, 25-22, 25-14).  Iowa Icemen then faced the Florida Wave Men in another close match.  Florida started off strong winning sets one and two (17-25, 24-26) but Iowa was able to come back in set three (25-20).  Unfortunately, the Iowa Icemen were not able to withstand and dropped set four (23-25).  The last day of play the Iowa Icemen faced Gateway VC.  Again the Iowa Icemen were in a close match dropping sets one and two (23-25, 17-25).  And again Iowa came back to win set 3 (25-21), but dropped a close fourth set (23-25).  Overall, the Iowa Icemen played tough competition throughout the tournament and finished the tournament tied for 11th.
